Self - Love

Has there ever been a point in your life where you felt like you: are not good enough, cannot recognize yourself, or are not comfortable with who you are?

For most of us, this point arrives when we have not been loving ourselves enough or aren’t giving ourselves enough credit. More importantly, we might not be prioritizing ourselves and end up sacrificing our needs to ensure the happiness of someone else.

Now, I am not saying that it is wrong to make others happy but if it comes at the cost of your own, then is that really worth it? Instead, we should learn to always have a higher regard for ourselves and create healthy boundaries. This is where Self-Love comes in. Self-Love is taking care of yourself, your needs and well-being, and never sacrificing that for the sole purpose of pleasing others. Never settle for anything less than you deserve. It’s about understanding and respecting your worth.

However, this does not mean obsessing over yourself and assuming you are the best. It simply means to accept your weaknesses and appreciating them as they make you who you are. Loving yourself means having compassion for yourself, treating yourself kindly, and taking care of yourself just as you would do for a friend.

Self-Love is a skill that requires effort, time, and practice, especially for some of us who might have grown up in an environment where the love was lacking or not stable. The reason it takes time is that Self-Love is not an instant gratification process unlike shopping for new clothes, getting a make-over, or indulging in food.

Self-Love is best described by Dr. Andrea Brandt, who said, “Self-love means giving yourself what your body, brain, and soul needs for the marathon that is life. It isn’t hedonism and it isn’t chasing a physical or emotional high. The practice of self-love is the practice of nourishing yourself.”

From my personal experience, I can tell you one thing for sure: no one will ever understand you better than yourself, therefore learn to love yourself as much as you would expect from someone else. No one will care about you more than you care for yourself, therefore take care of yourself the way you would want someone else to take care of you; you want to be pampered then begin with pampering yourself.

And to end, one last piece of advice, spend time with yourself, get to know yourself because the more you know yourself, the better you will be able to love yourself.
