What is Happiness?

Edited by Parita Nagaria

Happiness can be described as the mental state of oneself. It involves feelings of content, joy and positivity within one's life. We feel satisfied when we live a life where all our needs are fulfilled. However, most of the time, our needs will never be fulfilled because we never stop wanting new things. In this process, we usually forget to live in the present and enjoy what we already have. As our needs get fulfilled, new ones arise and this can make us feel like we are never going to be content.

So, to be truly happy, one must learn to live in the moment. The moment you stop worrying about the past AND the future, you will begin to enjoy the present. I understand that it can be hard to let go off your worries, but let me ask you something, will worrying about an issue help solve the said issue in any way. We all know the answer is a big NO. The only thing worrying will do is prevent you from thinking logically. Instead, you will end up doing something that you may regret. Oh, and not to forget, worrying will only give you wrinkles ;).

Yes, I understand that most people have responsibilities on their shoulders and so, a person is naturally going to worry. The one thing you need to ensure is that while fulfilling your responsibilities, you are not suffocating yourself. Enjoy the small moments in life. Learn to laugh and smile through all sorts of situations. Smiling can reduce the amount of stress in your life tremendously. Talk to yourself and encourage yourself, it is the best motivation. Always remind yourself that everything will be just fine. A stressful time in your life is just a chapter of your life, never the end!

Another major factor that affects ones happiness, is the company that one surrounds themselves with. If the people around you are constantly stressed, then, naturally you will be too. Therefore, take a break from these people if necessary. Clear your head and don’t let others problems add onto your already existing pile if you can not handle it. Work on understanding your limits and respect them. You can help others around you to relax and work through their stress but you need to make sure that you are not transferring their stress into your stress. As I mentioned earlier, stressing over something is not going to solve the problem at hand, so, focus on possible solutions instead. This will be beneficial to you and the person you are trying to help.

Take time out to do things that you love. This will make you happy and this break will equip you better, to deal with other issues. Never regret any decision that you took whole heartedly as that decision made you happy, even if it was for a short while. Learn to live in the moment and a joyful and content lifestyle will follow.
